What is prior authorization?

Prior authorization, often referred to as a "PA," is when your insurance company requires a clinical evaluation before approving coverage for a treatment. This process ensures that the prescribed treatment is medically necessary. In some cases, your insurance may not cover a prescription until it’s been reviewed and approved by a clinician.

If your prescription requires prior authorization, your pharmacy typically informs your One Behavioral clinician. They will then work with your insurance provider to supply the necessary information. Since prior authorization can delay your prescription, it's advisable to request renewals as early as possible. If you experience issues with prior authorizations or if your insurance doesn’t cover certain medications, be sure to notify your provider.
