Why is there a code for an “office visit” when my visit was virtual?

The use of an “office visit” code for virtual appointments is due to current billing practices. Insurers view virtual and in-person visits as equivalent and cover them at the same rate. As virtual care becomes more prevalent, we expect billing codes to evolve to better reflect the nature of these visits.
